Freezing errors

it seems that everytime i start-up my computer it starts to lagg and freeze, and forces me to hit Alt+Ctrl+Del and shut down the entire program. my most recent programs are Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, could i be infected with a virus, i dont know. I have notron antivirus use it always, and i also disk clean up and disk defag. if there is anything that can solve this please help me!
