Freezing during startup

Alright I have had this problem with XP Pro pretty much forever. When I start
Windows each morning, my Creative Mixer icon won't load into the system tray,
and the Saitek Profiler will crash and ask me to submit a report. This
normally happened randomly and usually once the items were back in the
prefetch directory, everything ran fine. However, I just purchased a 1GB
stick of memory to replace one of the 512MB sticks, and now the task-bar and
everything locks while Windows loads, and I wind up with only my nVidia icon,
Symantec icon, and the LAN and Internet connection icons. I get nothing else,
and I am supposed to have at LEAST two more icons.

Now I already ran memory tests from a boot CD and the new stick is fine.
Windows was recently formatted and reinstalled, SP2 is on, everything is
updated including drivers, so something is not right. Is the extra memory
(same brand, same speed, same everything as the remaining 512MB stick) too
much for XP? The system ran fine with 512MB and 1GB, but 1.5GB is causing the
taskbar and system-tray to remain locked long enough to crash programs out.
How can I fix this?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Hope this helps.

XP should have no problem with 1.5 GB of memory. One possibility is some
sort of incompatibility between the old and new memory sticks.
