Freeze top and left side

H

Husky

What I want to do is FREEZE the top row that's a label for the columns under
it.

And Freeze the 1st column on the left that's also labels for the rows to it's
rights.

It's a grocery list

item cost
1 meat $6.99
2 etc.. $0.00
The only thing that needs to be modified is the currency number $6.99
I've looked up the FREEZE panes, and the split windows and have no trouble
reading. But the options are just not working.

I've had the split icon and moved the meat by selecting between the 1 and 2.
All that did was made row 1 taller.

I have had it working as I want, but the moment I hit sort it all goes out the
window.
etc.. comes before item and meat.
and it looks like this after a sort
A B
1 etc.. $0.00
2 item cost
3 meat $6.99
And the top row is now A, B C etc...

And it happens every time [monthly] That I use the list.

Isn't there a way to permanently freeze the top row and 1st column ?

If you select cell B2 ($6.99) and then Window>Freeze Panes, that will do
what you need, BUT with one proviso:

If you scroll Left<->Right, the 'frozen' top row will also move left/right
to stay with the columns that it heads and similarly if you scroll up/down.

(An 'absolute' freeze where the row/column headers did not move to stay
with their respective rows/columns would not really make sense.)

If you need to sort, without disturbing either the panes of the list, then
you MUST select an occupied cell within the list:

If you select A2 (meat) and then sort, all rows (EXCEPT the list header),
will be sorted by Item.

If it STILL does not work, check the default setting on the Data Menu.
Click any cell within the list
Menu Data>Sort...
My data range has (section)
Header row (make sure that it is checked).

That was it, the header row wasn't checked. Least I have an idea as to what to
do next time it fails, but the question arises, why does it toggle itself off ?
I can guarantee I've never touched it.
Is there something in the config setups to keep that thing toggled ? Cause like
I said this isn't an uncommon problem. Some times it works exactly how I have
it set, and others it turns to trash sorting everything and screwing up
everything.
I learned the trick to select just a cell under the row to sort long ago.
Actually picked that up in Access.

That header row toggle stays on for the time it takes to sort it once.
I think I know why it's acting up more now. I just upgraded to office XP.
It does the sort then toggles it back to no header row.
I'm pretty sure it'd be fine with me if that toggle were locked in the header
row exists position.
How do I lock that toggle ? Saving the sheet with it toggled to on has zero
effect.

G'Day again Husky,

From experience, I came to the conclusion that Excel Xp 'guessed' whether
or not a list had column headers, and the option on the Data Menu was used
to override it's guess.

I do know that a list constructed entirely of numbers ALWAYS had the option
'no headers', and one constructed with text in the top row (from the outset)
always had 'headers'.

If you like Access, you will also like Excel 2003. There is an option on the
Data Menu that allows you create (define) a List which then has some smarts
including a blank row at the end with an (Access-like) asterisk.

I'm glad I could help.

Well I pretty much felt cheated when upgrading to XP. I was expecting 2005
everything. Access and Word are pretty much all I'm comfortable with. I'm just
now finding out not everything was upgraded.

So maybe if I use one of those other sheets ie: #2, and start out with the
labels, then copy the columns from sheet 1 it may make this thing a bit smarter
?
And I won't have to use the pull down sort every time I need to sort a column ?
As for creating the list. That option exists in the 2002 version with XP.
