Freeze then will not reeboot

Using XP Pro SP2, about once a month or so my system will freeze and I have
to either reset or power off. When I try to reboot the XP logo screen comes
up, the blue dash starts cycling then the keyboard lights blink the blue
dash stops and it just hangs there. It will boot fine in safe mode, then I
do a system restore to a earlier date. Sometimes the first one will work
some times I have to go back a few days to get it to boot. Any ideas as to
what may cause this. One thought is this happens after automatic updates
occur but have not been able to pinpoint it yet.

When it happens for the next time, from the Safe Mode fo to the
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer and check if you
can find some informations on the issue here.
