Freeze header row at top of each page and exclude it from sorting

In Excel XP on Windows XP, I need to freeze the first row (header row)
so that it will always appear at the top of every page and its data will
not be included in sorting. Only data below the first row should be
sorted. How do I do that? At present whenever I sort by any column, the
header row gets sorted along with the other data. That is unacceptable.

In the Sort dialog box, select the Header Row option. To print the headings
on every page, select the option on the Sheet tab of the Page Setup dialog.

Thank you, Mr. Aitken, that helps.

Your first post implies that you use the sort icons, but it is always
better to highlight the range you want to sort then use Data | Sort. On
this dialogue box you can specify which columns to sort on as well as
indicating that you have a header row.

Hope this helps.

The upper leftmost cell selects the entire worksheet. Then I choose Data
| Sort. Now that you told me about the header row button, I can select
it in that same dialog box to exclude the first row from being sorted.

I do not use the A-Z/Z-A sort icons on the toolbar if the worksheet
contains multiple columns. The other method is easier for me because I
don't get prompted to "expand the selection" or "continue with the
current selection".
