Freeze at name button

I have installed vista ultimate on my laptop, runs great except for the start
It does not happen all the time, but about 75 percent.
When i leave it on or use the sleep or hibernate off when starting back up
my computer locks when i push the name button not opening windows. this
requires me to do a hard power off. When the reboot starts it goes to the
warning screen and if you click on start windows normally it works perfectly.

I am looking for a couple possible solutions before i just do a clean
install...
