Freeware version of Partitino Magic?

I think I once read here that there is a freeware imitation of
Partition Magic, or at least something cheaper.

My current need is to take a partition that's already in use and make
it smaller so that I can carve out a small partition from the space
that used to belong to it. Partition Magic would handle this, moving
all the data to one end or the other of the partition, making it
smaller, and creating the new one.

I have plenty of empty space in the current partition.

Do any of the cheaper ones do the same thing well? Programs that you
recommend?

Or can I use defrag to move everything to the beginning of the
partition? Even if I can do that, there is no way with some products
to then make the partition smaller, is there?

Thanks a lot.

There are a few free partitioners.

There are some earlier versions of True Image that are now free.

True Image does it a lot better, much less buggy.

Acronis True Image.

Yes.

Correct.

I use the free gparted (Linux).

If it is a supported filesystem, gparded should do it.

Homepage is here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
and they have a bootable image (cd/USB key) as well.

In any case, do a full backup before resizing.
While gparted is not as crash-prone as the commercial
partition-magic, it can still mess up your partitions.

Thanks to you and Rod. I'm looking at both now.
