Freeware to work with wmv files

I need to find freeware to edit and splice wmv files. If such a program
doesn't exist, then I need a freeware product that can convert a wmv
into a format that can be opened and edited by VirtualDub.

So it doesn't really split, but rather converts a selection
For splitting asf and wmv one can use ASFtools or Asfbin.
Asfbin is command line, I know of 2 guis: Asfbingui and Movica (requires
..net).

To convert .wmv to .mpg (or between other formats) you might want to
look at TMPGEnc:

LICENSE:

It doesn't work on 100% of the time, but it's a program well worth
having. Used along with CombiMovie,
