Freeware to remove Trojans

M

Martinez

Despite having Adaware, Spybot and MS Antispyware on my PC it picked up a
Trojan called Trojan.downloader.BHO.req that can't be removed by MS
AntiSpyware or manually. Norton and the other two didn't even find it.
This Trojan even stops you from buying a removal program online or
downloading MS critical updates. Anyone....

Have you tried the stinger by Mcafee or Housecall?

As ellis_jay suggests, you might want to use the free online scan at:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If the Trojan prevents you from visiting that website, open your hosts
file, remove the entry for the site and make the file "Read Only". You
should then be able to go there.

Good luck.

Isn't it called Mozilla?

Since I went to Mozilla, I can only read about spyware . . .

OK, there's lots of putz's out there who use IE and they need help, so
I monitor the groups.

For goodness sakes, get with it! Drop "Internet Explorer" and get
Mozilla and learn how to use it. Some of the new "default to no
scripts" and block ads extensions, make surfing look like it was back
in the 80's (except there's a lot more content now)

Thanks. No. Does it remove it? I've already tried 4 other antispyware
programs, other than Spybot and Adaware and they don't even see it on my
machine. Only Microsoft AntiSpyware saw it, but can't remove it.

Don't tempt me. <G> I've been thinking about dumping I.E. for awhile
now. Just to damn many drive-by drop-off crapwares out there.

No need to literally dump IE. Use it on trusted sites that require it.
Make Mozilla or Firefox or K-Meleon your default browser ... and use
it for most browsing. This approach works well for me. Also, consider
using Proxomitron.

No but that sounds like a good idea. I'm willing to pay for a program that
could remove this Trojan so will head over there. Thanks again.

Spybot S&D has the facility to list "Browser Helper Objects" (BHOs) and
other things that may or may not be malware. Enable Advanced mode and
have a look. You will have to learn how to use the tools, and how to
judge whether things may be malicious.

These days a tool to find rootkit exploits should also be in your
toolbag; tootkitrevealer is good for Windows.

Best wishes,

I switched my wife's machine to Mozilla a few years ago and she's been
using it without problems. I used Netscape for years but after using
her machine a few times decided to switch to FireFox.

It was a little more intimidating at first with all the customization
that it allows. alt.fan.mozilla is there if you have a problem.

I think what impresses me the most is the rare occasion where someone
discovers a security vulnerability in Moz - the developers acknowledge
the problem within hours and have a fix ready in 1-5 days and update
the latest build.

Compare that to MS's denial of a problem (one week to one month),
acknowledgement that a problem might exist (a week or two there), but
it isn't as serious as everyone thinks (another month there) and
finally a CRITICAL UPDATE is issued with all manner of dire warnings
on how serious the problem is.

We wouldn't want to give people a false sense of security. When it comes to
protection, changing browsers will not help. Mozilla does not protect you
from viruses, Trojans, or worms any better than IE. The best way to protect
yourself is to use good Web hygiene.

It's very simple to prevent many of the browser hijackers and BHO's that are
blamed on IE. All you have to do is quit going on porn and gambling sites,
and set ActiveX controls to "ask".

Are you being pedantic about this? Browsers in general don't expose you
to what can accurately be called viruses, Trojans, and worms. They do
allow other malware to run and install. My experience is that systems
using FF/Win are less troublesome than IE/Win.
