freeware for burning cd's

hi. i am looking for an easy to use freeware program to burn my old
cassettes and albums to cd.
do i have to download into a mp3 or wav file, or can it be done in real time
direct to cd burner without loading up the hard drive ??
any help would be appreciated

I'm not very good at this but I remember that you can rip right to
disc, but I think it is better to rip to hard drive and then you can
diddle with the sound files to get rid of some of the noise and
artifacts, if any.
But John's advice and link to dadioh is the best way to start off
with good info.
