Does anyone have any recommendations for a good freeware duplicate file
finder. I have tried Duplicate File Finder but want something better.

JC: you mention Duplicate File Finder.
I believe there are a couple of freeware apps with the same name, and
possibly one shareware app as well. The app I've used is from the url
below. Personally, I like this app a lot, since it's so customizable.
My only problem with it has been that in the display after searching
for dupes, I can't easily configure the display to show the filename
column and the folder location & filesize next to one another. I keep
having to scroll right to see all this, then when I go back and click
on a particular file to delete, then moving on to the next match, the
display returns to where it was previously and I again have to scroll
way far right. This MAY be because many files have very long filenames,
like over 100 characters, but am not sure. Anyway, I think this app
could easily be configured to just display X number of characters.
Also, since I tend to put a fair amount of text into the filename
itself, I'd really like to be able to edit the name in DFF as well,
taking the text from one filename for example, and adding it to another
copy of same file before marking the one(s) to be deleted.

There are a number of things I DO like about DFF, tho. esp extensive
customizing abilities, eg specifying ONLY certain folders to check,
ONLY checking certain extensions with fully customizable wildcards, and
specifying min/max filesizes. Latter is especially useful for my needs,
but here again, the filesize data seems to always be at far right and I
have to scroll to see it -- not exactly idea, since if I could easily
see that the filesize is, say, 1K I might not worry so much about
copying filename data from one instance to the other.

I don't know which version you've tried, but according to a recent
email, there's a new version out [previous was 1.0.28], but I haven't
tried it yet. It was supposed to have been posted last week Friday, but
I checked and it doesn't appear to be available yet? Don't know for
sure, since all the links I've checked via Google say that direct
linking isn't allowed. Anyway, here's the info I received:
Duplicate File Finder new version to be released.

Hello,

I am releasing a new version of Duplicate File Finder on Fri, Jan.
20th. It is still freeware and fixes all the previously reported issues
and has many new enhancements and requested features implemented. The
details are posted on the new message boards (
http://srhoda.proboards85.com/).

Sincerely,

Rashid Hoda.

============
I've also pasted in below what author says about this new version:

The new version is done. I have bought a domain to host the webpage,
forum and download but it will not be available for another 24-48
hours. Once it is available I will post the link here.

Rashid.

Here is a final list of changes/fixes in 1.1.0.0:

· New search engine and more search options. The search engine is
significantly faster than the previous version.
· Fast searching (especially noticeable when working with large
files).
· Much requested file name only scanning is available now.
· Safe comparison of files using CRC32 checksums (when the content
only or content & name options are used).
· Option to protect files found in specific search folders from
deletion. This can be accessed from "Blocked Folders" option in
search results display or through the menu option.
· Option to ignore certain folders from scanning. Recycle bin, System
volume information, and windows folders are ignored by default
settings. The ignored folders can be access through the "Folder
Exclusion List" button or through the menu.
· Detailed, color-coded list of found files (name, path, size,
modified date/time).
· Several options on list of found files (for example: open
"target" folder, execute file, etc.)
· Option to mark/unmark all files in a directory.
· Option to mark all files with more than one extension (as
requested).
· Files are always sent to Recycle Bin when deleted. Before the
deletion process is performed a confirmation box is displayed.
· Option to move marked files to another folder with an option to
preserve the path of the original file.
· If Duplicate File Finder was unable to move or delete a marked file
(if it is being used by another user or process) then the color and
font style of the file is changed to reflect that.
· Option to export search results to comma delimited text file,
HTML-table, Rich Text Format (RTF) or plain text file.
· Option to save the search results for later use.
· Option to search for files that are accessed, created or modified
on or after a certain date.
· Customizable color scheme for duplicate files found.
· Option to turn the grid lines on and off for the search results.
· Option to disable the screen saver while the search is in progress.
· New installer with option to create shortcuts on the quick launch
bar, and desktop (as requested).

==========

Finally, there was some discussion I believe within the last couple of
months re duplicates file finders. I'd recommend checking
groups.google.com and searching a.c.freeware for this discussion. I
know I got several dupe utils to check out from that discussion.
