Is there a freeware software that will clone an entire hard drive?

TIA

clone maxx http://www.pcinspector.de/clone-maxx/uk/welcome.htm

Question: Why is PC INSPECTOR™ clone maxx free?

Answer: The full version is sponsored for you by "CONVAR – Die
Datenretter™".

I have not tried this yet, if you use it please post back.
So far their are a few problems:

1. Downloaded Version number differs from what is posted on the website.
Website says v1.0 - when you run the program it says v0.95 build 769
2. Clone Maxx detected the 200GB harddisk as 128GB.
3. Clone Maxx detected the 80-pin IDE cable as 40-pin, which will result
in IDE Controller running in UDMA Mode 2 instead of UDMA Mode 5.
(slow mode instead of fast mode)

Has anyone else tried this yet?

I downloaded it this morning and ran it this afternoon. Detection was
perfect, as was the cloned drive.

Thanks!!!

Both Western Digital and Maxtor distribute free software with their new
drives (and you can download it off of website) which you can use to
clone your present drive.

I find the floppy disk version works best + avoids WinXP assigning the
copy-to HD as "D".

I've used both for years, and they work great.

I see it's a time limited Beta. I wonder if there will be a "free for
personal use" version"?

I believe its a 'beta' only because its not yet 99.999999% 'proofed'.
Added it reqs "reg" only to insure that users get informed of latest
'ver'.
The 'author' seems not satisfied with 99% proofed, which 'he' tags
as/beta.

I am also given to to think its headed towards a 'freebie',
as is [XXCOPY] .

........
Also, it's specificied for use on only NT based OS.

Yes ... [XXCOPY] handles FAT32/16/(12)(vfat(LFN)) , [XXCLONE] handles
NTFS FSs ...
Not sure if/when that 'both' will be wrapped in same 'exe'.

Also, read "up" on the additional DIY "stuff" for the MBRs , & boot
loaders, et al,
that may be user_diy required.

[XXCOPY] works quite easily, & well, 'here' ...
it can 'do' incremental, as well as 'full',
to save HD space for time_slice backups ... ,
revolving, once a week, 4x's 'back'. :)

"It" being a file_by_file(FbF) backup(BU), makes it more useful than an
"image" BU,
in cases where only OS/FS pieces are required for restore.
Given current HD sizes, I doubt that HD_space_saved is much of an issue
twixt FbF & Image formats.
Also 'nice' to have a real mode DOS, w/DPMI and FAT32(vfat) capability,
for simplified "recovery" ...
floppy based, or, USB CF_based if you can boot it.

Some 'RTFMing' =is= required.
A single 'util', w/200++ options/interactions, aint yer usual 'util'.

.......

:)
Mite I "be" so bold as to suggest
==> http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/index.html ... works more better_er.

I don't understand.. I did beta testing for them from the beginning of
XXClone and can assure you that it works on my XP Pro FAT32. As recent
as yesterday, it saved me from a huge disaster.

XP shares the architecture of NT. It works on both.

Freeware?? After you complete a full registration form, it appears you
only get a 30 day version ... then it stops working every 30 days ...
unless you download a new version, then you only get another 30 days.

Oops, sorry! I made a mistake. The one I grabbed was CloneMAXX. It is
completely free.

They are keeping it Crippleware until it goes Payware.

Yes, XXClone is time-limited trial-betaware, but XXCopy by the same authors:

http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm

is still freeware for private use. I use it with the clone parameter and
it works perfectly for me. It will do what Wayne is asking.
