I'm told AVG is soon not to be freeware.
What other anti-virus freeware software is available, and what experience
have you got of it's use.??

I switched from AVG to:

avast4! - free for home use. I've had better results with avast! , as it
caught virii that AVG didn't detect.
get it here:

Plural of virus=viruses, not virii.

That's a very well-done reference.

It clarifies the arguments. Although, in my read, it clarifies the
arguments still much in favor of using viruses as the plural. It does
not show convincing defense for the confused creation, "viriis."

For a read on the argument where a position is definitely taken (viruses).

The alt.usage.english FAQ, it speaks only briefly. (In the group itself,
they've had passing conversations on the subject, but none of those I'd
read involved anyone trying to take serious defense of the usage "virii".)

(The aue cite above, there is a bonus in reading it. One can add to their
vocab a couple of rarer formal words -- such as "penes.")

where a position is definitely taken (viruses).

I think I should not have summarized the document that way. Instead,
I should have called it a thorough investigation of the problem.

That said, the author definitely does not see "virii" as an acceptable
solution.

| Those confused souls who write *virii are tacitly positing the existence
| of the non-word *virius, and declining it as though it were like filius.
| It's true that l/r are both linguals that sometimes get interchanged,
| and that f/v are just a change in voicing[2], but that's just reaching.
| *Virii is still completely silly, so don't do that; otherwise, everyone
| will know you're just a blathering script kiddie.
