freeing up resources

have windows xp home on a laptop. with only one program open it is
incredibly slow. when i go to task manager it indicates that i using 99 to
100 % of resources. In the background I have zone alarm on for firewall
support as well as norton anti virus. not sure what else.

Open Task Manager. Click on the Processes Tab. That will show you everything
that is running and what is hogging memory or cpu cyles. If you click on the
column headings, they will resort for that particular column. Try clicking on
the CPU column so that the highest usage is at the top of the column. You
should see what is making the processor work so hard. Might give you a clue
as to what is going on
