Free Serif Software

I've hit a problem with this approach. Some web sites wouldn't let me
register when I used a webmail address (in this case, myrealbox.com).
It's frustrating to work the signup page again and again, and finally
make up an address that incorporates my real ISP, and then the routine
goes through.

Sites that don't accept webmail addresses are just STUPID. My "@yahoo"
account is the only one that I have that's stayed the same over time.
I've lost all the other ones when I've changed ISPs.

As for Serif... I use their software and maybe get one piece of e-mail
every couple of months. They don't require so much info to register
anymore and they have an opt-out link on all their messages.

I SIGNED UP FOR THEIR MAILERS and ended up
getting Pageplus 8.0 PDF version for $10.00 That program is
damned near as good as QUARK EXPRESS or INDESIGN
LOL.

Laugh on pal! (Respectfully submitted for your approval.)
It is a GREAT PROGRAM. I use it to produce professionally
printed documents all the time. I can output a file that is thoroughly
compatible with any printer worth their salt. If they can't comply
with the industry standard for PDF output, I don't do business with
em.

I will, as long as you keep posting.

Do they still require you to register it to make it work?

The only Serif stuff I had for free (cover disks) required
registration, and then....the amount of spam that that company
generated was quite remarkable.

(They required a telephone number as part of the registration, and like
a naive fool I gave it to them: they started RINGING ME to flog their
upgrades. I was not pleased...)

Maybe Serif's changed their ways and don't do that any more, but I was
sufficiently annoyed the first time 'round that I'll not be risking it
again.

I'm a satisfied Serif customer. When I moved I made a point of letting
Serif know my new phone number. They occasionally phone with offers. I
say yay or nay and they go away.

Serif's software isn't the best in the world but it's usually good value
if you aren't looking for the latest bells & whistles.

Suuuuure you did. But giving you the benefit of the doubt, not too many
people like telemarketing and would do the same.

Suuuuure they do. I never gave them my phone number and actually had to
change my email address to block their spam. To be fair, I changed my
email address (user ID became a sequence of randomized alphanumeric
characters) to block spam in general. Should have used a toss-away
address in the first place, but I didn't know any better at the time.
Live and learn. At least I faked my other info.

Exactly the reason not to bother with it. There are so many other
alternatives, that their nosey registration process is not worth it.

People in this group have asked me in the past why I go after Serif so
often. The reason is simple: I asked them repeatedly to stop spamming me
and they ignored me. I want others to avoid going through that. Besides,
as you say Bernard, their software isn't the best in the world to put it
mildly.

That is strange John. I have used Serif software in the past and found it
acceptable for the "price". Their spam was restrained and easy to cope with.
I am a long time lurker in this group, and only post occasionally, but I am
puzzled by the complaints re Serif. Hey, nothing in this life is perfect,
and nothing is free. Their occasional email is fine for the use of their
software I felt. However, YMMV, and I get the impression that you have been
heavily blitzed by spam from them. If that is the case I can only say that
my experience was completely different.

Kind regards, Peter.

Like (I imagine) John, my experience was entirely different to yours.

I didn't get much e-mail spam, but the stuff I did receive was neither
restrained nor easy to cope with. In particular, I *seriously* object
to having tele-sales people call me at home, just because I've
registered a product and been required to supply a phone number.

As mentioned up-thread (somewhere), they may have changed their ways --
I hope so -- but I was sufficiently browned off that I'm not going to
try them again.

Yep, it was some time ago I used Serif software, so indeed they sound as
though they have become more agressive in their tactics since then. That's a
real shame, because it used to be acceptable, to me anyway. Certainly I
would be disappointed if they started phoning me up. Guess that's an
advantage of being in New Zealand. It's a long way to phone me.

Well, John, looks like you might have a point after all.

Cheers, Peter.

But then again, you're a disgruntled half-wit. 10 of you combined
wouldn't make a decent moron...
