I wanted to assign letters, permanently and consecutively (e.g., C, D, E, F
etc.) to partitions on my primary hard disk. I googled around and found the
program below recommended my many. It does not change the registry in any
way, but does its work through a dos program that runs out of autoexec.bat,
each time the computer is booted. The program supplies a windows program
that is basically a wrapper or gui interface for the does program, making
it very easy to assign drive letters to partitions, at will. I found the
program has worked flawlessly so far, including assigning the drive letters
as I asked, when I used DCC, direct cable connection to transfer files from
a remote computer to my main one.
