Suddenly there is a popup saying times running out. Can that be?

How long have you been running it? It might be free, but it sets a 1
year time-out from the day it installs. I haven't used it myself for
that long but did notice this in the "options" (System tray) under
"Register" tab -> Expires on: xx/xx/xxxx

Perhaps BitDefender Free should be classed as "crippleware"?

Yes, it seem to be regarded as freeware by some, but obviously isn't.
