I am looking for a free antispam program that is easy to use and is as good
as Norton antispam that is bundled with Norton internet security 2004, can
anyone recommend one? Thanks for any help given.

Why not consider eschewing OE for either Thunderbird or Mozilla for
mail and news? Both have built-in Junk Mail filters. I use Thunderbird
and it works very well. I'd recommend Firefox as your browser, too.

You only need third-party software if you use Microsoft products.

K9 anti-spam, and there's nothing wrong with Outlook Express and IE browser.
I have used Microsoft products for many years with no problems.

Scottie:

Actually some of the reviews that I have read about Norton Anti-spam is
that it is NOT that good.

I use SpamPal http://www.spampal.org which operates on Public Blacklists
(RNSBLs - by bad-guy servers and bad-guy country's servers) and your own
blacklists and whitelists. Filtering is done on the header and with an
excellent URL filter plugin, on URLs in the body too.

Since 99% of my spam (and most spam out there) comes from know spam
sources in China, Korea, Russia or Brazil, this method is very
effective. Since over 90% of my spam contains URLs to blacklisted
sites, this method is very effective.

The RNSBL is less sophisticated than the currently popular Bayesian
filter technique but it is highly effective, especially if you are not
getting any real email from places like China, Korea, Russia or Brazil.

Good luck,

Steve

Yes.

1) Bin Outhouse Express and install Thunderbird, Eudora etc,
2) Bin Intershite Exploder and install Firefox.
3) Install Spybot Search & Destroy - not that you'll need it because
steps 1 and 2 have got rid of the main methods of infection.

I tried Mozilla but found out I could not download some Internet web sites?
I'm not all that clued up with computer settings. To be honest my computer
skills are nil.

If the site is using a (bad) browser sniffer, you could choose to
spoof your UA (User Agent) string. See the PrefBar.

Here's how I have mine set up:

If it still doesn't work, shop elsewhere. <g> I changed banks a
couple years ago because the web site of the bank I was using refused
to work with anything other than IE. I told them why I was leaving, too.

It is all a matter of experience, logic, and personal interest.

This depends upon the user's browsing behavior and other factors, such
as the presence of a firewall. As someone who cleans out Viri and
mal-ware for a living, I can tell you that there are plenty of things
wrong with both OE and IE. Now, some of that can be compensated for by
tweaking, which is beyond the expertise level of the "average" user.

Unless of course, you like to leave your system open to hijacking,
drive-by installs, and the like. Prevention is much cheaper than the cure.
