Are there any free anti-virus programs that work with Vista Home Premium 64Bit?

http://www.avast.com/eng/x64.html

The new 64-bit Windows platform brings increased productivity and dependability as well as many
security enhancements. Nonetheless, the risk of malware infection on this platform is still
relatively high. Effective protection is a must.
We are glad to announce that all avast! antivirus editions, including the free Home Edition,
now fully support the new Windows x64 platform (avast! Server Edition supports both x64 and
IA64 (Intel Itanium) platforms).

avg?
It's been my experience that you'd have to allow an infection into the pc in
the first place. I've tried various malicious attempts on Vista, (my own, not
anyone elses), and it stops in its tracks or just shut's it down altogether.
Will be interesting to see the first widespread Vista virus.
Not looking good for the virus writers, maybe they can start being
productive now...

a statement from an AV vendor saying that vista is still at relatively high
risk?!?!? well duh! they have to see their software.

fact is, even a novice user would have to be an idiot to get a "virus" these
days. an executable would have to be downloaded and ran before it could
infect anything. and even then you would be warned several times before it
was allowed. i havent ran any resource sucking AV software since win98 and
ive never had a virus or any other kind of scumware

If you don't have AV software on your computer, how do you know that you
haven't been infected? Viruses come in other forms, scripts tha infect
Word, Excel, come in through attachments in E-Mail, etc....

I had one friend who didn't open attachments, was very carefull not to run
anything he didn't know about, and when we installed a good antivirus, it
showed that he was infected, but the viruses ran in the background, and he
saw no evidence of anything wrong.

AVG doesn't have the free 64 version, but do offer the paid version.

What was that internet worm that PCs without upto date AVs got within
seconds of connecting to the internet called? It took an MS update to
protect PCs Blaster Worm? was it, May be Troy was off line that week?

Oh yea, I remember, as soon as you connected, the Blaster worm installed
itself and power cycled your PC. Nightmare for thousands. You are right,
Troy was probably on vacation for a few weeks and missed it. He was very
lucky.

There's a strong smell of BS around here, don't you think?

Grant:
I think that it was Blaster. The MS update patch for it was issued
well in advance of it hitting. Only one of my 4 systems was hit. The one
that was hit hadn't been used for almost 6 months and got hit before the
update could be installed. Not everybody got hit by that one but it proved
that updating was important. Have a great day.
