Free Anti-Virus Program -- McAfee AVERT Stinger

If it's not from www.mcafee.com then it's probably not an official
McAfee program so I wouldn't trust it, let alone try it.

NAI = Network Associates, Inc, the makers of McAfee. It is official,
but I can't comment on how effective it is.

It's non a non-McAfee/NAI domain. That makes it un-official to me.

If you can find it listed on the "official" McAffee website, then I'll
accept it ;o)

I just discovered this AV program -- McAfee AVERT Stinger.. See
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Is this program any good?

Many av vendors now provide specific cleaners for a limited number of
current malwares. Sysclean from Trend probably handles/cleans the
largest number of malwares .... literally hundreds of them. It also
provides an additional scan-without-clean function with the full blown
detection capability of its regular av scanner products. My web site
offers a downloader/updater for Sysclean. Both the scanner and the sig
files are updated quite often. It's a nice freeware offering! Also, I
have a link to Antidote which uses the powerful KAV scan engine, and
is updated weekly. It doesn't offer cleaning capability but the value
of its powerful detection for on demand scanning makes it a really
worthwhile freeware item to have.

Hi
You might want to ask over here too. alt.comp.anti-virus

<Quote>
Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific
viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but
rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an
infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine
technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and
scan performance optimizations.

From the website:
"Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific

Why do you want to use such a limited program? Wouldn't it be better to use
a full anti-virus program?

Is that "official" enough for you?

No offense meant, but should I be taking the above disclaimer as a
hint/warning?

Slight typo on my part, was meant to say "it's a non-McAfee/NAI domain....."

I didn't realise vil.nai was one of theirs (didn't bother to do a WhoIs).

hehe yep (and now I feel like an edgit).

nah, I just didn't want people to take everything I say so seriously or as
gospel, so tried (and obviously failed) to add a little humor ;o)

Why do you want to use such a limited program?

Becuase:

A.) It's small enough to copy to a floppy

B.) If you know you're infected with virus XYZ, and that Stinger
disinfects XYZ, then you don't need a full-fledged antivirus to clean
it.
Wouldn't it be better to use a full anti-virus program?

For preventative measures, yes (although practicing safe hex makes
AV's unnecessary, IMO). For repair, however, a small package like
Stinger serves an important purpose as well.

Usually, unless a company is doing some kind of webhosting, then their
sub-domains belong to them. So vil.nai.com, www.nai.com, etc, will
all belong to NAI.

It's ok, we all have our moments. :)

Art, as always, your site is very useful, thanks.

The link for this does not work, Netscape (old) starts to connect, ends,
no 404, it just does not connect. Not a normal "no site found" screen.

Well I have found that many full blown Anti-Virus program whether they are
commercial or freeware do a really poor job at disinfection. Full blown AV
programs tend to be great at detection and prevention but disinfection is a
different matter. Many of the sites comparing AV programs focus on their
success rate at detection and prevention. But rarely are AV programs
compared for their ability to properly disinfect your PC of viruses. Pity!

IMHO, programs such as this AVERT Stinger program do a much better job at
disinfection (and detection) if the virus in question on your PC is listed
as one of the viruses it detects and disinfects. The major limitation of
programs like AVERT Stinger is that they do not detect or disinfect that
many viruses -- only the most common viruses.

Which? Sysclean? It doesn't install. The sysclean.com scanner is about
1.3 meg. The pattern file is now up to 7.2 meg. Rather difficult
updating frequently with dialup :) That's quite a disadvantage if you
want to use it as an alternate on-demand scanner. I tend to overlook
this sort of thing since I've had DSL service for a long time now.

I see I had put the question just above the subject, next time below the
subject. The link for Trojan Finder did not work.

Thanks for data on Sysclean.

I checked all my links yesterday after your post and they all worked.
Just checked again and it works. Sometimes that Russian link is slow
to respond.
Thanks for data on Sysclean.

It's quite a interesting program with both the scanner and pattern
files updated _very_ often. That's why I created an "easy updater" for
them. Trend's detection isn't on a par with KAV's but I think it's a
very good scanner. The number of malwares it can clean has been
growing quickly.
