free anti spyware program

I have been using Ad-Aware for years and was happy with it but I
can't download the update files anymore. I downloaded their latest
version of the program..'anniversary edition' but that didn't change
anything. I followed their suggestions on the web site but it still
doesn't work.
Now I am tired of fooling with them so I would like some suggestions
for another free or low cost program.
Thanks,
Janice

Two points:

1. The best free anti-spyware program, and it's excellent, is
Anti-Malware, by MalwareBytes. Get it at
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

2. In my view, no anti-spyware program is perfect, so no single
anti-spyware program is sufficient for protection. You should run at
least two. The second best is SuperAntiSpyware. Get it at
http://www.superantispyware.com/

I think the one that comes with Windows is fine, and there's no reason
to choose a different one.

I used to recommend third-party firewalls over the Windows one
because they were two-way, and the Windows firewall only monitored
incoming traffic.

I've become convinced, however, that outbound protection is
meaningless. Once one of the nasties gets into your computer, it can
essentially do whatever it wants, including circumventing the
firewall. So the extra protection provided by a firewall that monitors
outbound traffic is more apparent than real.

As long as you never in any way unknowingly invite, or allow via CD/DVD,
whatever, any malware onto your machine that wants to make a call or go
out covertly to infect others' machines. And you don't care that Office
programs, mplayer, almost all music programs, ebook programs, all kinds
of updates that aren't actually updates, etc. etc. etc., all call home
and report your activities, check titles and who knows what else? The
most common route is to unknowingly invite something in along with a
legit download from a hacked or compromised web site of which there are
many this last few months and the numbers are growing. They're hitting
trusted sites now, like CNN, ESPN, MSN and several others I read just
yesterday.
Personally, I only allow programs I KNOW what they're doing to have
any kind of access to the internet or LAN. The malcontents have
discovered that the AV and ASP programs are deleting the oldest threats
in order to get their footprints and timing down, and are now re-using a
bunch of those things. One hacked site or malicious site is all it
takes and with that latest as yet not spread ActiveX hole the
work-around just came out for, there won't be anything to reject it for
months unless you use the workaround. Even FF has one happening too but
fortunately they're a little faster than MS.
It's folly to not have control of outgoing communications. Even MS
admits that their firewall is redimentary and the user may wish to go
for a better one. It's there mostly to allow users to get online for
updates & tools with fresh systems.
NAT routers help but they are not the end-all answer.

More ridiculous rhetoric. If nothing gets in, you don't have to check what's
going out.
Used Windows firewall since XP and NEVER had a problem.

I followed your advice and downloaded both programs. I updated and
scanned with both and found a long list of things on my computer
which Ad-Aware had not found. Computer is running much faster and
smoother now. Thanks for your help.
