Frames

I am new to using frames. I put up a website for our neighborhood group.
The website is http://www.friendsofthecarboncanyon.org.

I made the website using frames. The main page appears to be
http://www.friendsofthecarboncanyon.org/index.htm. When you use the browser
and go to the site, it works fine.

My problem is that now that the site has been up for a few weeks, google has
found it. The link google displays is
http://www.friendsofthecarboncanyon.org/welcome1.htm.

Pressing this link (from Google) will load only the wecome page, without the
frames. This takes ability to navigate the site away because the index
(frames) page is not displayed.

I want all visitors to the site to get to the index.htm page so that they
see the frames and are able to navigate the site as intended.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion would be to read this article:

your site without using frames.

The best idea, don't use frames. Frames were originally created way back
when most people were still running 28.8 modems and the idea was to help
save bandwidth and prevent the same graphics from being loaded again and
again. Nice idea, but the flaws (such as what you mention) were quickly
found. Most designers dumped frames within a few years of their release as
they weren't really needed. To replace them, tools began to use templating
systems, such as the Dynamic Web Templates (DWTs) available in later
versions of FrontPage. This helps provide the consistant look and feel as
well as navigation, but avoids the issues of frames.

Best bet, use a different mechanism so that your site can have it's
individual pages linked to as well as properly referenced in the search
engines.

Hi Roy,

Unfortunately you just discovered one of the biggest problems with using
frames the hard way. Here's an article that will mention a couple of
workarounds (a link on all pages to your frameset home page as well as some
JavaScript ways to dynamically produce frames):

In truth you might be better off not using frames if that is an option for
you to consider.
