Fragmentation

Hello
I am using a 250 GB hard drive, and I am having problems with the disk
becoming terribly fragmenting after, for example, 1 or 2 days usage.

I do a lot of surfing around the internet .. I am disabled and my pc is my
only daytime entertainment.

I use Symantec's Norton System Works, and it shows the percentage of the
drive, and gives tool for defragmenting and optimizing.
I have used that method, as well as Windows Home method.

Can anyone advise why the drive gets so fragmented .. is it something I am
doing wrong, or the pc's defragmenting, or is it typical for the amount of
usage ??

1st R.click my computer,properties,advanced,performance,page file/virtual
memory,change button,select "let system manage" click set 2X,close out,a
restart should be prompted. Also, with any pc you need a page file & which
usually causes the fragmentation, adding another hd and adding a page file
to it as outlined above reduces fragmentation. For microsofts explanation,
read kb555223

You should decide on one defragmenting tool and stick to it.

Modern defragementing tools include optimizing functions which analyze
how your computer starts up and how applications are loaded, and then
organizes files to match the sequence in which they are actually
loaded. In many instances, especially with .DLL files, only part(s)
of the file are actually loaded so sometimes files will be
deliberately fragmented so as to optimize the loading sequence.

The problem is that different defragmenting programs do this file
optimizing differently, and one defragmenter will view the
optimizations done by a different defragmenter as just so much
additional fragmentation that needs to be fixed.

So each time you run Norton it busies itself undoing the optimizations
that the Windows defragmenter did, and then does its own
optimizations. And when you run Windows Defrag it starts by undoing
all the Norton optimizings and then does things its own way.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck
