FP2002 Shared borders

M

Midas

More often than not if I close FP2002 and then re-open the web I am
working on the shared borders on all pages will be missing. The only
way I can get them back to reboot the computer and all is well again.
I have the same problem on a number of different computers.
Your suggestions as always are most appreciated.

Have you tried the usual repairs in the sequence below:
(especially 1-3)
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

I only have this problem locally as I would not publish pages without
a border.

Shared borders and Include Pages are design time tools w/ the content (inside the <BODY> tags) of the Shared Border or Include page
"embedded" or included as html in your pages when you save any of the file(s) using them (or save the borders / include pages
themselves)

FP converts your page(s) to a series of tables to include the Shared borders, (which are really just a special case of Include
pages)
But FP can not build those tables if either your shared border page content or main page content has illegal html or broken tag
pairs
- usually due to missing </body></html> tags, or unmatched table / cell tags (unclosed table / cell tags), or some other unclosed
html block element

If you can see them using File Preview in Browser they will publish in as part of your pages

If you can't see them using File Preview in Browser, it's because FP can not build the included content tables, so you need to
validate and correct your broken html

When this problem of missing shared borders occurs they are not
visible in preview mode. I have over 2000 pages and the borders will
all dissappear at the same time until I reboot so I don't think it
would be related to missing tags, etc on this many pages.

But it may be invalid HTML in the shared border file(s).
These are located in the _borders folder.
Use Tools-> Web/Site Settings-> Advanced Tag
and tick Show hidden files and folders to see _borders folders.
