Please can anyone help?
Briefly as possible this the problem. I Updated/Uploaded
my pages on Friday without problems. Yesterday could not
as when I click the "Publish" icon on the page , enter
user name & password etc FP freezes up. I can then only
close FP via ALT/CTR/DELETE. The the same problem occurs
when using Publish on the Eile menu except I can escape
the frozen FP by clicking cancel in the Publish" dialouge
box I can access the directories via Hosting Controller
and upload that way but things like hit counters etc.
don't update when page refreshed. On he hosting
controller I used "check and fix extensions" and got the
following error report.....

Error reading IIS default Vroot info
Error 2 opening registry key "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Web Server Extensions\Ports\Port 80".

Being reltavely new to web publishing that means nothing
to me. I have used FP Detect & Repair without success
and also tried Re install so, any help and advice will be
welcomed.

Many thanks
Terry

Try using File Publsih to see where your site is trying to publish to
Also do some cleanup
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Thank you for your response Stefan B Rusynko.
I have done all you suggested but without any success. I
have also also now tried to access my web address via web
folder in "My Network Places" but this has caused XP to
freeze and could only exit by shutting down my pc..

Thanks again

Terry

Your use of the hosting control panel has probably corrupted the FP SE
- have your host reapply them on the online hosted site
Then try to open the online site in FP using File Open Web and enter your URL as
http://www.yoursitename.com/
- Does it open?
If so run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Then once again try the usual repairs in the sequence below:
(note: - enter the below system variable paths in your Windows Explorer address bar)
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in %TEMP% and/or %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- Did you find any here to delete?
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
- Did you find any here to delete?
3) Delete the existing site in My Network Places, then open the local site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
- Try to publish

If above fails, next
4) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Thank you once again Stefan B Rusynko I will try your
suggestions and post the results here asap but more
likely next weekend. Despite your clear and concise
instructions I will tread carefully as for me it looks
akin to walking on broken glass, lol.
Again Many thanks for your support.

You may want to create a free test site at www.lycos.com
You can test there without changing your main site
Testing will help you figure out if it is your PC or your online Host

Thanks LsuEdu for taking the time to respond. Yours is a
good Idea and I will use it to test my pages
Thank You.

Just to thank you and everyone who helped sort out my
problem.
Not being confident about deleteing files etc. I opted to
restore XP back a few weeks then re-downloaded all the
critical XP updates followed by all the Office updates,
My server assures me there was no problems with FP
extensions their end. I tried many times yesterday to
publish but still had the same problem so switched of
giving it up as a hopeless task . However I tried this
morning and amazingly, it all works as if there had never
been a problem. Out of curiosity I took a look at "check
and fix extensions" on the host and it still show the
same error message
Error reading IIS default Vroot info
Error 2 opening registry "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Web Server Extensions\Ports\Port 80".
As it is all now working I'll just hope the problem does
not return.
Again, Thank you all for your help
