FP + Access question

Doug

I've used FP2000 (minor, static pages) and Access2000, but not together.
Now I havd a db I want to use online. I am using aplus.net to host the
site. According to there help files, I created a DSN connection. I then
uploaded a copy of the database file (.mdb) into their db folder. When I
connect to the server by ftp, I see db, logfiles, and wwwroot folder. When
I publish my web through FP, the files go into the wwwroot folder. My db
file is saved in the db folder. I don't have a copy of my .mdb file in my
web folder on my computer.

I haven't actually created the web page that will contain db information.
The page will be based on a query. Should I create from within Access or
FP? I am thinking FP.

My real question is, how do I create the connection from within FP? I
looked at the database results wizard, but I am not sure on what type of
connection to select. Can anyone explain in simplified terms what I need
to do, or is the answer a little more involved than I think? I've read
here a little about DSN connections and DSN-less connections, but I am
confused. According to aplus.net, saving the database file in the db
folder protects it.

I am editing the web files on my computer then publishing them using FP. I
don't have a web server on my computer (XP Home).

Also, my type of account (primoXR) can't use ASP.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

You say you can't use ASP - that is required to use Frontpage & Access on the
web. At minimum, the requirements for using Frontpage and its database
integration features would be the server extensions and ASP enabled server (e.g.
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro and IIS.

You need to have asp working because the FP Wizard creates asp pages.

You can design the query using Access if you like, and then at the point
in the Wizard where it allows you to edit the sql of the query, just
past in the sql from the Access-generated query.

Then why do they say "Collect and store data with Microsoft Access. Take
advantage of the MS Access database support." for this plan if you also
require ASP to make Access work? ASP is offered on the next plan up. The
plan I'm on does include FP server extensions.
(Don't get me wrong, I believe you, I'm just wondering why they would say
this.)
If I do require ASP, then I may have to change hosts. The current plan I'm
on is $19.95/mo, the next plan up w/ ASP is $29.95. I may have to search
for another host w/ ASP for less than $29.95/mo.

Thanks,
Doug

You would have to ask them. I looked at their site, and you're right, they
offer DB support, but don't allow scripting languages that support using
them. Peculiar.

$29.95 is more than you need to pay for Access and ASP

There are lots of places you can get both for $10 - $15 per month.. You
can even get mysql database for $10 per month.

Do you have any suggestions for a good, cheap host? or are those terms
mutually exclusive?

Thanks.

Thanks for all of the responses regarding the need for ASP. But, the
question still remains (once I get ASP), if I save my db file (.mdb) in the
db folder on the web server, how do I "connect" to it from within FP? FP
publishes to the wwwroot folder.

?

=?iso-8859-1?Q?Crash_Gordon=AE?=

I use Alentus.com, they have asp.net & ms access db starting at 9.95 - 14.95 - 29.95.
They're support is EXCELLENT - I can highly recommend them.
Windows servers, but DO support php too.
I have 1 x 9.95 and 3 x 14.95 accounts with them.

I have a similar issue.
I want to learn how to implement and Access Database too.
When I try to upload to my server, I get a warning message telling me that
ASP is not allowed on the server since it is an Lynx Server (I think), Not
Windows.

What can I do?

You would have to switch to a Windows IIS web host to use Access and ASP.
