FOUND.xxx directories

My hard disk has several directories named FOUND.01x.
What are they? can I delete them?

They are folders created by chkdsk. The files in those folders are named FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK, FILE0002.CHK etc. You may be able to retrieve some of the data from the files, but normally it isn't easy to do this. You can try renaming the files and putting them back into the appropriate folder, but I usually delete them.
