Forwarders

Colin M. McGroarty

I'm having an issue on one of my DNS servers when I try to add a DNS domain on the Forwarders tab. I get a general DNS error, "The server forwarders cannot be updated. A zone configuration problem occurred." There is no corresponding event in the event logs and the error seems to be specific to one DNS domain.

I can add other DNS domains on the Forwarders tab for this server without issue. I can also add the "problem" DNS domain to the Forwarders tab of other DNS servers without issue.

All DNS servers are running Windows 2003 SP1. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Kind Regards,

Ace,

Thanks for your reply. The problem seems to occur anytime I enter anysubdomain.mydomain.net, where mydomain.net is the name of the Windows Active Directory domain. If I dcpromo the DNS server to a member server I can add the entries. However, if I dcpromo the server back to DC status then I have the same issue. I can however make the entries on any other DC that has DNS. Thoughts?

IIRC, you will get this error anytime you create a conditional forward that
is in the same tree as an existing zone.
Instead of using a conditional Forwarder, create a delegated sub domain
named 'anysubdomain' in the mydomain.net zone.

Kevin,

What I'm experiencing would certainly support that as I can create the
forward using subdomain DNS servers. I tried creating the forward on
another top-level DC/DNS server and had the same issue. Thanks for the
response.

So let me understand this. The DNS server you are setting a forwarder to is
hosting a zone called, example.com. You are then attempting to create a
conditional forwarder to a child domain such as, child.example.com.

If that is the case, you can't do it. You can either delegate the "child"
name to the nameserver hosting the child zone called child.example.com. Then
configure set as "all other domains" back to the parent or a the parent
zone, create a Stub zone pointing to the nameserver(s) hosting the child
zone called child.example.com.
