Formulas won't go away

I'm trying to edit a formula which has worked fine through
many iterations of a spreadsheet I'm developing. Weirdly,
though, whenever I make even a minor change, the formula
remains visible in the cell and will not function.
Furthermore, nothing substantial is the formula is
changed: it's not like I'm deletiing the equal sign or
something.

Help! I'm getting worried that the file I'm working with
has simply become corrupt, which would be really, really
bad. Can anyone save the day?
 
Perhaps you have changed the format of the cell to "Text".

Re-format to General and hit F2 then <ENTER>

If all formulas are showing, hit CRTL + `(above tab key) to toggle "view
formulas" on/off.
