Formula error

When I use a forumula to sum cells [e.g., "=sum(F84:F96)"] the answer given is zero. Even though the formula is correct and on display in the viewer. What gives?
 
A guess would be that the data that look like numbers are, in fact, being
seen by Excel as text. Have you entered the data or imported it ?

Thank you for responding. I entered the date and I have verified that each cell is formatted in $ as I wished it to be. Since then, I have found the cells are "locked". What's that?
 
It means that you cannot change the data in the cells ... but it is only
effective if the sheet is protected. Even then it wouldn't affect the
formula. Try selecting each cell and pressing F2 to edit it. Are there any
other characters in the cell besides the numbers ? If so, delete them and
press Enter
