formula displayed instead of value of formula

when i type in a formula, say =QUOTES!A18, it is displayed as =QUOTES!A18
instead of the value of cell A18 in the sheet named QUOTES. what am i doing
wrong?

Select Tools/Options from Excel's menu bar, click the View tab on the dialog
box that appears and see if there is a check mark in the Formulas CheckBox
in the "Window options" section. If so, uncheck it.

was the cell formatted as text before the formula was entered. If so delete
it format as general and enter again

1. You are in "formula view". Hit CTRL + `(above Tab key)

2. The cell was pre-formatted as Text. Format to General then F2 and ENTER
