I made a mistake, typed three asterisks and then hit enter, creating what I
think is a section break that cannot be removed through the select/delete
command. What can I do to remove the unwanted break from my document?

First, anytime something unexpected happens in Word, press Ctrl+Z (UnDo)
immediately to reverse whatever happened.

Because you're probably now past the point where Ctrl+Z would work, click in
the paragraph immediately before the odd-looking line (which is a bottom
paragraph border--not a page break), and (depending on your version of
Word), turn off borders for that paragraph. In Word 2007, for example, click
the Borders tool dropdown arrow (in the Paragraph section of the Home ribbon
tab), and choose No border.
