but when I went to reformat because of a virus it wiped out my partions.
Even when I have done a staight repair with the XP upgrade disk it wipes out
my partions. How keep this from happening agian.

Perhaps you are deleting the partitions when you format. Normally,
formatting or a Repair Install will only affect the system partition
and/or the partition to which you direct the install.

Whenever you do something as simple as a repair or even installation of an
OS, you need to do the steps specific to that software. The problem with
third party software is the additional steps you have to follow. Also when
you need to get support for a problem, you have more work to figure out
where the problem originates. I would suggest not using partition magic
unless you have a very good reason to use it. Windows XP handles partitions
and booting multiple installations very well so there is much less reason to
use utilities like Partition Magic than there was with the older systems
like 9X.

For a beginning user, and most general type users I would agree.

The problem is that many users advance quite fast. Partition Magic allows
you to do so much more than the installed operating system, or the Windows
XP installer does. (-:

Neither a repair install or a clean install should do anything to any
other partitions other than the one XP is being installed to. I have
included some links on how to do each of these.
