If the document you opened was based on a template other than Normal.dot,
then this might be an explanation (in other words, you have saved the change
to the document template, not Normal.dot). I suspect that's unlikely, but
it's the only explanation I can think of.
Try this instead: create a new document as you did in step 2 below. Modify
the Normal style there as you did in step 1. Then try creating another new
document. If this doesn't work, then I'm pretty much out of ideas. The next
step would be to open Normal.dot directly, make the change there, and save
Normal.dot. If you can't save Normal.dot, it may be that it is protected and
is therefore read-only. If you're on a standalone computer controlled only
by yourself, this is unlikely. If you're on a corporate network controlled
by evil IT wonks, this is all too possible, I'm afraid, and you'll have to
take it up with the net Nazis.

gui, from where the Normal Style Modification is done.
2. Now, I create a new document using "File->New->BlankPage" taskpane. But
I check the Style "Normal" & It has the "Automatically Update" check box
checked in. But it should supposed to be not there, as I did it in step 1.
The other document Doc1.doc is still open.
3. Why for this new doc, the Automatically update for "normal" style is not cleared. Pls. clarify.

create a *new* document (by using the New button on the toolbar or selecting
Blank Document from the New Document task pane), then your change will be in
effect. If you are creating a new document based on some template other than
Normal.dot (by using one of the templates listed on the New Document task
pane or in the File New dialog), then you will need to make the change in
that template as well.

That works fine. But I face another problem whenever I open a new
document. What happens that the new document has still the "Automatically
Update" box checked in for the Style Normal. As suggested by Suzanne, I
originally did the clear the check box for "Automatically Update" and
Checkin the "Add to Template" then I "Applied". But using the OPenDoc item I
opened a new document later, but this "Automatically Update" is still
checked in. And I am forced to redo the same for that new document also. How
to avoid this? what could be the problem?
Am I not following anything for new document correctly? Pls. suggest.

I'm having the craziest problem after they upgraded me from Word XP to
2003...
When I select a line or paragraph, and choose any formatting (indent,
bold, numbering, you name it) the formatting applies to the entire
document, not just to the selected paragraph!?
I reveal paragraph marks, and everything looks normal.
This even happens when there are multiple paragraph marks between
paragraphs!?
What's also odd is that I can hit [Ctrl]-[Z] after one of these
anomolies, and instead of "undoing" the formatting, it corrects it!! In
other words, the formatting is wrong, but [Ctrl]-[Z] makes it right (the
first time, a second [Ctrl]-[Z] actually performs the "undo").
I've even tried "detect and repair."
Am I losing my mind?
