formatting pivot table report

I'm trying to use the "format report" feature with a pivot table but can't
format a field.

I have a field that I dragged into the row area, but it is a dollar amount.
I cannot format the cell as currency. Every time I refresh the pivot table,
it reverts back to no formatting. I know how to change the format/number for
a cell in the data area, but I do not have the same options when it's in the
row area. Is this possible?

First, make sure that the Pivot Table toolbar is visible by moving to some
location within the pivot table. If it's not visible click VIEW /TOOLSBARS
and activate it.
Move to the cell you wish to format in your pivot table and click the PIVOT
TABLE command button on the Pivot Table Toolbar. Select FIELD SETTINGS from
the drop-down menu and then click on NUMBER command button. You'll be at the
standard formatting dialog box for numeric formats.

Thanks for your reply. This does not work, however. Because this is not a
data field, it's one of the filters (in the Row area), I do not get those
options. In the "field settings" window, I get subtotal options.

I forgot to add, if you don't see a number button the field data is text and
can't be formatted as a number.
