Formatting in Outlook 2003/2007 Turning on Shading Reduces Blank L

A friend who still uses Outlook 2003 asks why it is that he has to turn on
"Shade Group Headings" in order to see more Groups in his message listing
pane (because doing so eliminates blank lines in the pane). I tried the same
thing in Outlook 2007 by going from Menu Bar --> View/Arrange
By/Customize/Other/Grid Lines and Group Headings/Shade Group Headings
(checkbox).

This appears to have the same effect in Outlook 2007 as in Outlook 2003.
Is there any way to lose the blank lines in the message listing without
having to turn on shading?
Many thanks for your help on this minute point.
