I successfully changed my hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS -
now I want to do the same for my Western Digital 120G
external hard drive.

I tried doing the same routine I did with my C drive,
however it's asking me to "Enter current volume label for
Drive H"

What does this mean?

CAN I convert my H drive to NTFS? I don't want to destroy
all the things I have on it.

It's name , Like "back-updrive"

What happens if I type that in and it ISN'T the correct
name? I don't want to type something in wrong and then
have all hell break loose.

go to start run type cmd This will bring you a dos prompt
like c:\ or c:\windows at that prompt type ?: and then
enter. Replace ? with the letter for your external drive.

When you are at the external drive prompt type Vol and hit enter.
This will give you the name of your drive (volume label)
and the serial number also.

If you didn't name the drive well then it may say "? has no label"

The name is your choice, what do you want to call it. I
call my USB drive " MBack " I have 6 partitions and backup
6 diffrent computers on each partition. each partition has
a diffrent name, like "HPlap" is my laptop, "Wdell" is my
wifes dell..

Hi,

You don't have to label it, you can *if* you want to, otherwise just hit
<enter>

Took me a couple of shots to work this cryptic message from Microsoft out
also.

Before you run convert.exe, look to see what your 120G drive is currently
called (before you try to convert it - i.e., not the name you might like to
give it after its converted). That's the name its looking for. Also, I'm
sure the other tips here will work as well.

Hi there. Thanks for the help. When I hit "enter" without
typing anything in, it says "an incorrect volume label was
entered for this drive"

I'm totally lost - how do I find out what the label's name
is?

(insert sound of wailing baby, banging its spoon on the
high chair)

Mark,

Right-click the drive in Windows Explorer, choose properties, the name will
be on the general tab.

You should be able to. What it wants in reply to that query is the
confirmation of the name of the partition it is to deal with: If first
in the Command Prompt you give
VOL H:
the 'in drive H is' tells you the name to use
