Formatting doc

I am trying to clear a document of all formatting, how do
I do this?

go to edit > select all and then select Normal from the
formatting drop down menu

Thanks but this did not delete the tables and tabs that
are in the document.

try select all, then copy, go to a new document. Go to
edit > paste special and choose unformatted unicode text.
