formatting cell

hello,

I have a cell that has both text and number in it. I would
like to custom format it so that if i want to add, subtract
or do anything, the number is picked up and if i want to do
something that concerns the text, the text is picked up.
Any ideas?

Hi Cathy
can't be done with formating. You probably need some user defined
functions in VBA (or some worksheet formulas which parse the data prior
to summing it)
