Formatting Bug - Word 2K & XP

Does anyone know of a solution for this formatting problem with Word 2K or XP

Microsoft Word 2000 and XP has a problem with formatting..

Open a blank MS Word document. Type about 8 lines of tex

Select ONE word, hit CTRL B (control and "b" together
o
Select ONE word, hit CTRL I (control and "i" together
Or try another formatting change such as bullets etc

The entire document goes bold or italics or whatever formatting change you select
If you hit CTRL Z (undo), the problem goes away, but I've found this has to be done each and every time

Is this a problem with just using hot-key formatting commands

Does anyone know of a solution

Thank you

What has happened is yout "normal" STYLE has been set to "Automatically
update" so when you use that style and change anything, the entire document
changes (assuming everything is the Normal Style. To fix, click the
"Format" menu, select "Styles and formatting", on the "Normal" style, click
the dropdown arrow and select "Modify", uncheck the "Automatically update"
checkbox and check the "Add to template" checkbox, click "OK". Close out
Word (your normal.dot template will be saved with these changes), then
re-open Word and see if that fixed your problem.
