Corrupt normal.dot means formatting won't apply correctly

I am encountering the following problem that appears to be related to a
corrupt normal.dot in Word 2003:

When I apply formatting by highlighting text and then choosing the format
option eg bold, italics, bullet points etc, the formatting is applied to the
whole document not just the selected text. Ctrl-Z removes the erroneous
formatting but leaves the selected text with the correct formatting applied.

When I renewed the normal.dot the problem ceased. But recurred once I
reinstated all the templates and macros I normally use. To see if any
particular template or macro was causing the problem I renewed the normal.dot
again. I then have replaced the templates and macros one by one, testing the
formatting to see if the problem occurs but everything was fine.

However, today the problem is back despite no additional templates or macros
being added and everything being fine two days ago when I tested after adding
a template/macro.

My colleagues all use Office 2002 and many of the same templates and macros
with no problem

Has anyone come across a fix for this or am I just going to have to live
with it.....

It's very frustrating!!
