what is the difference between formatting and editing your work? does anyone
know?

Editing would be changing the actual text. Formatting would be changing the
font and paragraph formatting.

I don't know that this is technical or absolute, but may be helpful.

Editing generally refers to revising content in some way (spell check,
change wording, rearrange paragraphs or items in a list, add new content,
delete content, etc.).

Formatting pertains primarily to:
A) Character Formatting - changing font, font size, bold, italic, etc.
B) Paragraph Formatting - Tabs, indents, line/para spacing, borders &
shading etc.
