formatting and assigning drive letters

hello,

Need a little help with formatting. I partitioned first
hard drive c: & d:. Can I partition and format both
drives before installing XP? Tried this and no luck.
After installing XP on C:, tried to go back through
process to format D: and XP was installed on D: and
changed drive letter to I:
