I am attempting to format a table of contents at the beginnning of my
document before I create the body of the document. I have selected "insert"
and then "index and tables" and then the "TOC" tab. I accept all of the
default settings but when I hit OK and return to my document I get a message
"error: no TOC entries found" and I am unable to creat the TOC in the format
I have selected. I did notice that in the style drop box TOC 1, TOC 2, etc.
have been added. How can I, at this point, insert text and have it adopt the
TOC format I have chosen? Thank you for your assistance. My OS is Windows XP
and I am using Word 2000.

Before you can format the TOC, you need to create it properly. If you have
no headings in the document for the TOC to pick up, you have no TOC to
format. See http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html
