I'm getting a second hard in addition to the one I already have. It'll be
160gb drive. The plans are to use this as a storage drive (slave). My
question is: how can I format the drive using ntfs without installing an
operating system?
You will need to have XP with SP1 and ensure that your machine's BIOS
supports '48 bit LBA' or you will only be able to use the first 128 GB
(binary - 137 decimal). So check that point with the machine's manual
and the maker's web site. There may be a BIOS update needed
Once that point is satisfied, the actual partitioning is done from XP.
Go to Control Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk
Management and look lower right for the graphic of the drive. R-click
in the 'Unallocated space' and 'create partition' (a basic NTFS one)
going on to Format it
