Is there a formatting process buit-in to XP Pro to format a CD or CD-RW? If
not, then does MS have a utility that does it? If not, can someone point me
in the right direction.

Thanks

Nero's component "InCD" and Roxio's component "Drag to Disk" allow
formatting CD's for packet writing.

You can only "format" a CD-RW. A CD-R cannot be formatted, for the very act
would make the CD-R worthless - as it can only be written to once -
(multiple sessions, sure - but "format" implies erasure of the whole thing -
not multiple sessions.)

A good place to look for the limitations and possibilities of Windows XP
native CD burning activity is:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm

If you have a CD burner, you may be able to use a free application
to make a duplicate copy of your CDs. One such application is
ISORecorder:

ISORecorder home page (with general instructions on use):
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

Pre-SP2 version:
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/IsoRecorder/download.asp

Post-SP2 beta version:
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/download/ISORecorderV2B2.zip

More full function applications (free) for CD/DVD burning would be:

DeepBurner Free
http://www.deepburner.com/

CDBurnerXP Pro
http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Another Option would be to search the web with Pricewatch.com or
Dealsites.net and find deals on Nero and/or Roxio.

DLA and Drag to Disk will format CD-R disks for packet writing.

This is true, you can "format for packet writing" a CD-R or CD-RW.

You can reformat the CD-RW and get the 650MB back (nearly all of it) - but
with the CD-R - it just keeps getting more and more full until you run out
of space - because you really cannot "reformat" it - once the space is used,
it cannot be recovered on a CD-R - correct?

Exactly.

That is true. It has been my experience that they provide a different type of
format, and that disks formatted on one may not be read on the other. Maybe I
screwed somehting up. I like Nero, have used both..............Dick M.
