After having backed up ALL your data, boot from your XP CD and follow the
instructions.

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

If OTOH you want to install some other system, do it as part of that.
The FDISK from a boot of a Win98 startup floppy can delete an NTFS
'Non-DOS' partition

I assume you're trying to do this from within XP. The most likely
reason is that the OS is running from the partition you're trying to
delete.

If you really want to delete the partition where the OS resides, boot
from your XP CD-ROM. That disk is bootable, and has all the tools
you'll need to delete, recreate and format partitions.
