How do I format my drive which has XP Pro on it, back so that I can re-install win98? The XP CD lets me format the drive, but then goes right to installing a fresh copy of XP

You need to boot from the Win98 Boot disk.

Not sure but, I don't think the 98 boot disk will work if the disk is
formatted to NTFS. He may need to re-format the disk to FAT32 with the XP CD
and then install 98.

What if your Windows XP Home Ed. came bundled on your motherboard? I have no boot disk to boot from. I tried to format, but it keeps telling me to close all applications(which there are none). Someone please help!

If your PC came with a CD, it is bootable. If there is no CD, you should
have a restore partition on your hard drive. Read whatever documentation
came with your PC and look for restore information. If you find nothing,
contact the vendor of the PC.

Use this Link to download the Windows ME bootdisc, put it on floppy and
make sure your PC looks for the floppy 1st, which it already should, reboot,
and use the utilities as you normally would, FDISK, then FORMAT using
FAT32 Large disk support and install your Win98 OS like normal.
This is yet another solution or you could follow the links below. It all
works.

Hope this helps,

A 98 bootdisk's fdisk will delete a fat32 or ntfs partition if its
primary. One needs other tools tho if you want to use a 98 bootdisk to
delete a ntfs partition on a logical drive in an extended partition.

You can't format the hard drive with from Windows. That would be like
changing a tire while driving the car.

You need to use a Win9x bootdisk ( www.bootdisk.com ) and format the
drive. If your drive is NTFS, you will need to FDISK it and remove the
non-doss partitions, then create a new primary partition and make it
active.
