Format TC fields with TOC

I have a document formatted with styles and have created a TOC based
on the styles - and outlines,

I also have a couple of TC fields denoting text that I want to appear
in the TOC - set as level 4.

I have created the TOC based on styles and outlines up to and
including TOC4. I have modified each TOC style so they are is not
based on No Style.
When I change the indent on TOC4 the indents for all preceding TOC's
correspondingly change despite their definition has not been changed.

Simply can TC's format within a TOC be changed without changing all
other TOC styles?

No, the TOC 4 style controls the formatting of all level 4 entries, no matter
how they were added to the TOC.

When you modify a TOC style, it affects all TOC entries at that level; there
is no way around that.

What you can do is apply direct font formatting to the text in your TC
field. Direct formatting will display in the TOC. To see the TC field, you
will have to display hidden text.

all entries at the corresponding TOC level.

formatting will display in the TOC.

To see TC fields, display hidden text (for example by pressing the ¶
button).

Oops, I didn't make myself clear. I have set only the TC fields as
level 4 (using the l/4 switch) no other text is on this level. So I
would expect these fields to be reported in the TOC using style TOC4.
So if I change the format of TOC4, say increase the indent, I notice
all preceding levels acquire this indent...but all previous styles
TOC1,2 and 3) are not based on any style.
How do I eliminate lower levels inheriting this attribute?

Make sure you have only a single TOC 4 entry selected when you make the
change (not the entire TOC field).
