format hard drive

i'm trying to format the hard drive on my computer, but
the computer informs me that disk utilities or a program
is using the drive. i don't see any programs running and
as far utilities, i'm not sure what to look for. the
computer shows two local disks,but i think that there is
only one physical disk. i'm trying to install windows xp
pro. windows xp home is installed on the computer, but i
don't have that cd. i need to format my drive and i need
help to do this. all help is appreciated

Boot to the xp pro cd and follow the on screen instructions. The cd can
format for you if you like.

It's Windows itself using the disk. You cannot format the drive currently
in use.

Use the XP disk. Boot from it and you'll find the partition and format
utilities as part of the setup. However, if you're trying to simply remove
XP from the system and do not have the (bootable) CD, use a Win9x or ME boot
disk with fdisk and format on it. It *may* be necessary for you to delete
the partitions to gain access to the disk, so be sure there is nothing of
value.

You can't formt the partition/hard drive you are using.
